UNITED CHURCH WOMEN

UCW ladies

Since its founding in 1962, the United Church Women’s group has played an active part in the congregational life of Forest Hill Church.  The membership continued the work previously done by the Woman’s Association in supporting the outreach, social and physical needs of the church.

The U.C.W. raises funds through rummage sales, bazaars, offerings and knitting to finance its gifts to home missions and the Mission and Service Fund, its purchases of furnishings and equipment for the church parlours, kitchens and vestry, the fellowship coffee hours it organizes for each Sunday and its communication with church members through sending cards of sympathy or congratulation on special occasions. Its earnings and membership provide support and organization for most social events which foster church family friendship, such as the annual Christmas turkey dinner or farewell luncheons and special milestone birthday celebrations.  From time to time, when the Official Board has needed financial help with major projects, the U.C.W. has contributed to these needs.

The U.C.W. meets about five times a year and these gatherings are held on Sundays after church.  At its annual meeting Jan. 29th 2006, the following slate of officers was confirmed:  President, Sara Joyce; Vice President Iva Drain; Recording Secretary, Beryl Sewell; Corresponding Secretary, Pearl Viner; Treasurer, Earle Hoyte; Social Convenors, Merlin Knuckle and Pola  Brown.  Coffee hour supply purchasing is done by Danny McCulloch and scheduling of servers by Earle Hoyte.

The U.C.W.'s major fund-raising project is a large annual rummage sale held in late April or May.  This offers the usual array of housewares, clothing, gift items, books and toys, but in addition a Fashion Boutique and, in recent years, a Silent Auction.
